Janet and her Airedale Terrier, Chloe
I started drawing when I was 12 years old. As a teenager I took oil painting and drawing instruction from Roy Riethmiller of Martins Ferry, Ohio. After my success with Mr. Reithmiller's instruction, I went on to private instruction from Karen Catlett in Wheeling, West Virginia. These classes taught me valuable lessons in composition and watercolor, where I excelled in the watercolor medium. My love of watercolor painting led me to more classes at Oglebay Institute under the instruction of Vi Balsley.
I am a resident of Wheeling, West Virginia, and I am a lifetime, juried member of the West Virginia Watercolor Society and a juried member of the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society. My work has been accepted and shown in local area art shows, local retail outlets, and Oglebay Institute’s Crosscurrents. My work has been juried and accepted at Buxton & Landstreet Gallery, a retail outlet for West Virginia artisans, in Thomas, West Virginia. I was chosen as a volunteer Christmas decorator at the White House in 2012.
I have designed Victorian Wheeling and Centre Market Christmas cards. I also designed Victorian Wheeling correspondence cards and Suspension Bridge correspondence cards, which are found in shops all over Wheeling. These works were done in pen & ink.
For many years I designed and personalized watercolor paintings for the sustaining members of the Junior League of Wheeling and this has evolved into my personal art business selling personalized paintings geared towards children. I am well known in the Wheeling area for my personalized Name-Art watercolors for young children, which are sold in several Wheeling businesses.
I have offered my artistic service to the Wheeling Symphony Auxiliary for their fundraiser benefit, “Art of the Violin,” in 2006 and 2008. For the Oglebay Institute fundraiser, “Take a Seat,” in 2006 and 2008 I painted wooden chairs, which were auctioned at their benefit. I have also donated original works of art to Airedale Terrier Rescue Association's fundraiser, Fall Aire Frolic.
